CS Universitatea Craiova

The team competes in Liga I, is the premier division of Romanian football. Founded in 1948 as the football division of the CSU Craiova sports organization, it remained part of this club until 1991, when FC U Craiova took over its league position following a privatization process. During the years from 1948 to 1991, Universitatea secured four national championships and five national cups. Over the next twenty years, FC U underwent several restructurings and eventually lost its affiliation, leading to its classification as an unofficial successor to the original club. In 2013, the sports organization reestablished its football branch, claiming the heritage and honors of the founding Universitatea Craiova. This claim has been supported by various court rulings and approval from the Liga Profesionistă de Fotbal, though it remains a point of contention with a rival reestablished FC U squad. In 2018, "the White and Blues" captured the Cupa României, marking their first trophy since their reformation, followed by winning the Supercupa României in 2021. On the European front, Universitatea Craiova achieved notable success by reaching the semi-finals of the 1982–83 UEFA Cup and the quarter-finals of the 1981–82 European Cup. They were the first club from Romania to progress to the semi-finals of a UEFA competition and are unique in having eliminated at least one team from each of the top five leagues in Europe—namely, England, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. "The Students" host their home games at Stadionul Ion Oblemenco, which accommodates 30,929 spectators. They also have several rivalries, with the most significant being against Dinamo București.
